About 20 km. south of Rome the Colli Albani (Alban Hills) and their 13 towns are collectively known as the Castelli Romani ("Castles of Rome"). Since early Roman days they've provided a green refuge from the city and today Romans still flock to the area on hot summer weekends. On this tour you will visit two of the most famous towns, Castel Gandolfo, where the Pope has his summer residence, and Frascati, famous for its delicate white wine.

We travel from Rome a short distance south east to the Castelli Romani. This area has been frequented by the nobles of Rome since Roman times due to its fresh, climate during summer.
For centuries this tradition has been followed by the Popes, who still have their summer residence in Castel Gandolfo, on Lake Albano. You will want to take plenty of photographs of the stunning natural vistas everywhere you look!

From here we travel to the nearby hill town of Frascati, famous for its crisp white wine. Here we will visit a local wine cellar, built on the ruins of a palace belonging to Emperor Trajan, the 13th Emperor of the Roman Empire.

You will be delighted to see where the wines are preserved at a constant temperature of 15° C., on a tabernacle dating back to 400 B.C.! This unique venue has also played host to Hollywood royalty including Orson Welles and Tyrone Power.

You will enjoy a lunch of unique local flavors prepared with olive oil produced by the winemaker's family. You can also sample some award-winning wines and grappa all produced on the farm, and selected by your personal sommelier, Signor Antonio.

After lunch you can take a stroll through the vines before returning to Rome, satisfied by the wonderful history you have discovered and food and wines you have tasted!
